Blog EntryHOW TO TELL YOU ARE MARRIEDJun 28, '08 11:00 PM
for everyone
Another great one from Linda

Three women: one engaged one married and one a mistress are chatting about their relationships and decided to amaze their men.
That night all three will wear black leather bras, stiletto heels and a mask over their eyes.  After a few days they meet up for lunch.

The engaged woman: The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask.
He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my life.  I love you.' Then we made love all night long.

The mistress: Me too!  The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing the leather bodice, heels, mask over my eyes and a raincoat.
When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but we had wild sex all night.

The married woman: I sent the kids to stay at my mother's house for the night.  When my husband came home I was wearing the leather bodice, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes.

As soon as he came in the door and saw me he said,

'What's for dinner, Batman?'

Blog EntryFormula to Compute Paracetamol Doses for KidsJun 19, '08 3:38 AM
for everyone
I've always wondered how doctors computed paracetamol doses for kids. Well, I finally asked a good friend of mine, Dr. Janice Bacani-Carandang,and she gave me this info.

I'm posting it here for the benefit of those who have kids, and so that I also have a record of this if I ever lose the small piece of paper where I scribbled the formula.

The procedure

1. Get the kid's weight in kilograms. If you only know the weight in pounds, divide that by 2.2. That should give you the kg equivalent.

2. Look at the potency of the medicine you have. For example, I have Calpol 6+ which is 250mg/5ml. (others might be 125mg/5ml, and so on. Read the label on the bottle). We're going to be using the reciprocal of this. In layman's terms, we're going to baliktadize this number -- 5ml/250mg.

3. Now, you have to understand that the recommended dose is a RANGE and not an exact number, meaning there's a minimum and a maximum. Here's how to compute the minimum dose:

(WEIGHT (in KG) X 10 X 5ml) / 250mg

4. Here's how to compute the maximum dose:

(WEIGHT (in KG) X 15 X 5ml) / 250mg

A simple example

My daughter weighs 50 pounds. So, 50 divided by 2.2 is 22.7kg.

We're using Calpol 6+ which is 250mg/5ml.

So the minimum dose is: (22.7 x 10 x 5ml) / 250mg = 4.5 ml

And the maximum dose is: (22.7 x 15 x 5ml) / 250mg = 6.8 ml

What's the deal with the minimum and maximum?

So when do you use the minimum dose and when do you use the maximum dose? Well usually, you'd start out on the minimum dose but if the fever doesn't go down, you can increase the dosage until you reach the maximum dose. Although paracetamol is relatively safe and as long as you don't exceed by a lot (e.g. giving 7ml instead of 6.5ml), you need not worry too much about overdosing.

Disclaimer

Of course, I'm not a doctor nor am I pretending to be one. It's still best to consult your doctor if your child gets sick under unusual circumstances, or remains ill for an extended period of time. I just find the formula handy in times when I don't have a "lower version" of paracetamol for our younger kids. That way, I don't have to buy another bottle of medicine but can use what I have and just recompute the dosage to make sure I'm administering it correctly.

And of course, if you know me, you know I like formulas.

Mozilla’s Download Day ended at 11:18 PDT Wednesday, well on its way to setting its Guinness World Record goal with a staggering 8.2 Million downloads of the Firefox 3 browser — shattering all expectations the company had when organizing the event.

According to the Download Day FAQ, Mozilla is the first company to attempt this record, thereby setting the bar for most downloads in one day. The foundation’s goal was to beat the number of first-day downloads of Firefox 2, which was 1.6 million downloads. The “sky is the limit” number was 5 million. A Mozilla representative confirmed it crossed 8 million about 30 minutes before the window closed.

In the upcoming week, Guinness World Records judges will verify the number using count records and logs while removing duplicates before it becomes the number to beat in the future.

For those who took part in the “historic” day, Mozilla is handing out personalized Firefox 3 Download Day certificates that you can download, print, frame and hang next to your high school diploma.

If you are late to the party, you can still download Firefox 3 at Mozilla’s Spread Firefox page.

Blog EntryChoosing the Right Sunscreen LotionMay 14, '08 6:24 AM
for everyone
Yeah, I know. Why am I writing about sunscreen of all things? Well, I just had this bout of skin allergy. The dermatologist said it was probably because of the hot weather making me sweat and the moisture attracting all sorts of things. But anyway, she also looked at my skin and said that I had sensitive skin and that I should wear sunscreen everyday.

So, I saw this article on the web about choosing sunscreen and what all those acronyms mean:

clipped from cancer.about.com

Choosing the Right SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The higher the SPF number, the better protection against the sun's harmful UVB rays. The SPF number lets you know how much longer you can stay out of the sun without burning. For example, if it takes 15 minutes for a person to burn, an SPF 15 will allow them to stay out in the sun 15 times longer without burning.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing an SPF of 15 or higher for maximum protection. SPF is available in factors from 2-60. Does highest mean the best protection? Not necessarily. An SPF of 50 only provides 1-2% more protection than an SPF30.

UVA and UVB Protection

The label of the sunscreen will indicate the UVA or UVB protection.

UVA rays are responsible for the aging effect of the sun. However, overexposure to UVA rays can cause skin cancer.

UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer.

Choose a product that has states "UVA/UVB" protection or has "broad spectrum" protectant.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant

If you are looking for a sunscreen to use while in the water, choose a sunscreen that is "waterproof" or "water resistant".

"Waterproof" sunscreen should provide protection in the water for 80 minutes, while "water resistant" provides only 40 minutes of protection.

Closing the Door to Microsoft Vista

http://images.businessweek.com/story/08/600/0512_vista.jpg

General Motors (GM) may take a detour around Vista, the latest computer operating system from Microsoft (MSFT). The automaker has encountered so many speed bumps getting Vista to work on its machines that it may just wait for the next version of Windows, due in 2010 or 2011. "We're considering bypassing Vista and going straight to Windows 7," says GM's Chief Systems & Technology Officer Fred Killeen.

Vista taxes all but the most modern PCs with hefty processing and memory requirements. Many of GM's PCs can't even run the system. "By the time we'd replace them, Windows 7 might be ready anyway," Killeen says. Then there are compatibility problems with all the software that needs to run on Windows. GM's software vendors still haven't ensured all their programs will run on Vista trouble-free. So the company is sticking with Windows XP for now. Killeen figures GM could install Windows 7 in three or four years.

 blog it

Equal Parts Rejection and Acceptance

Many of Killeen's counterparts across Corporate America are finding themselves similarly vexed by Vista. The resulting delay or rejection of Microsoft's flagship product is stepping up pressure on the company to expand other areas of its business, including online software. Vista was first released in late 2006, but the dismay with it has come into sharper focus as slower-than-expected uptake affects Microsoft's bottom line, Google (GOOG) spiffs up its own free versions of competing software, and corporate tech managers move to put more Apple Macs on employee desks (BusinessWeek, 5/1/08).
